The PHLOXGARDEN in the Southpark of Düsseldorf is part of the COMMON SEEDS performance. This is a free community gardening space. All citizens are invited to plant and harvest here together on fixed, regular dates. The garden is used for self-sufficiency with fruit and vegetables in order to allow independent access to food. Everything here is planted and cared for in a natural way according to the biodynamic cultivation method and in the sense of permaculture. This means that no chemicals are used and only organic or Demeter seeds are used. A community garden is to be created here in the course of the year.
20 hobby gardeners have been gardening here with the artist since March 2021. The phlox garden is a dynamically growing area that is constantly developing. The gardeners, like the artist himself, have an influence on the design of the place. Since it is a much-visited public square, it is also a meeting place. Interested passers-by exchange ideas with the gardeners present about self-sufficiency, art and ecology. The meadow in the middle of the garden offers an ideal place for workshops, courses and discussions.
The community garden does not primarily serve self-sufficiency, but is a symbol for social transformation and alternative modes of production and living. We not only garding here – we’re thinking. The group in the phlox garden makes democratic decisions on an equal footing and designs the garden area collectively.
